Long Jump Approach Consistency: Fix the Board

Ask a long jumper what went wrong in a competition and the answer is usually about the board: three fouls, or three jumps from a foot behind it. Ask what they did about it and the answer is usually "moved the mark back a bit." Long jump approach consistency is treated as a feel problem. It is mostly a measurement problem, and it gets better fast once it is measured.
What consistency actually means
The approach has one job: arrive at the board at maximum controllable speed, on the takeoff foot, with the same stride pattern every time. Three things can vary:
- The start. Where the first step lands, and whether the first few strides are the same length and rhythm every time.
- The middle. Whether speed builds the same way, which mostly depends on the start and on the athlete not "checking" mid-run.
- The takeoff. Where the foot lands relative to the board, which is the visible outcome of the first two.
The mistake is to correct the third by moving the start mark, when the error was created in the first six strides. If the first six strides vary by a foot, no start mark will ever be right.
Measure before you adjust
Two check marks turn the approach into something you can read.
The start mark is where the run begins. Measure it from the board with a tape, in metres and centimetres, and write it down. "Fourteen and a half of my feet from the end of the runway" is not a measurement.
A mid mark placed at the sixth stride (four for a short approach). Someone stands level with it and calls whether the foot landed on, before, or after it, and by roughly how much. This one observation tells you where the variation lives:

Only when the mid mark is landing consistently, and the takeoff is consistently in the same place relative to the board, does moving the start mark make sense. Then move it by the measured error, once, not by feel three times.
The approach session
Run this every week in the specific phase, not only before meets:
6×full approach run-throughs, no jump, spikes on, competition
intensity. Coach or a friend on the board, phone on a tripod at ground
level if nobody is available. Record for every run:
- takeoff foot position relative to the board, in centimetres, signed (behind is negative, over is positive)
- mid mark: on, short, over
- wind (a headwind of any strength shortens the approach)
- which start mark was used
Six numbers per run-through, thirty-six for the session. Plot the takeoff
error or just look at the column. A jumper whose six takeoffs are
-12, -8, -15, -10, -9, -13 has a consistent approach that is 11 cm short:
move the start mark 11 cm closer and stop thinking about it. A jumper whose
takeoffs are -30, +5, -18, +12, -2, -25 has an inconsistent approach and
moving the mark would only shift the noise.
Common causes of variation
- Different first stride. A walk-in start, a rock-back start and a stationary start each produce a different first stride. Pick one and never change it in a meet.
- Steering. Looking at the board from four strides out and adjusting. It feels like control; it is the largest single source of error and it costs speed at exactly the wrong moment. Cue eyes up, run through.
- Wind. Approaches lengthen in a tailwind and shorten in a headwind by an amount that depends on the athlete, but is real and repeatable. Log the wind with the takeoff error and after a few sessions the adjustment per condition becomes obvious.
- Surface and shoes. Grass and mondo produce different stride lengths. Approach work on grass tells you about rhythm, not about the board.
- Fatigue. Run-throughs at the end of a hard sprint session are not a fair test. Do them first.
In competition
Under the current World Athletics rules a jump is a foul if any part of the takeoff foot breaks the vertical plane of the takeoff line; the older plasticine indicator has given way to that plane, so there is no margin at the front edge to play with (see the technical rules linked above and check the version your federation applies). Practically: your logged takeoff error tells you your usual spread, and the start mark for a competition should put the middle of that spread a few centimetres behind the line, not on it. A jumper with a spread of plus or minus 8 cm who marks to hit the line exactly will foul roughly half the time by construction.
Before the first attempt, take run-throughs on the competition runway with the same measurement: someone on the board, error in centimetres. Adjust once from the data, then trust it.
Logging it
The approach is the part of the jump that is entirely trainable and entirely measurable, and almost nobody keeps the numbers. A season of takeoff errors against wind and start mark is worth more than a season of jump distances for deciding what to change. Keep them next to the jumps in the same log entry: distance, wind, foul or legal, and the takeoff error.
