How to Time Sprints by Hand (and Trust the Result)

Most sprint training in the world is timed by a coach with a stopwatch. Electronic timing is for meets and for the clubs that can afford gates. That is fine, as long as everyone understands what a hand time is, what it is not, and how to take one the same way every session so the numbers mean something in a log. Here is how to time sprints by hand properly.
Why hand times run fast
A hand time starts when the timer reacts to the start signal and stops when the timer reacts to the athlete crossing the line. Human reaction time is not zero and it is not symmetric: timers anticipate the finish (they see the athlete coming) but can only react to the start (the gun or the first movement). The net effect is that hand times are almost always faster than the electronic time for the same run, and the gap is large enough to matter at sprint distances.
World Athletics handles this in its rules by treating hand-timed and fully automatic times as different categories and, for records and rankings, adding a fixed adjustment to hand times before comparing them with electronic ones (see the technical rules linked above for the current values and the rounding rule, which is to the next slower tenth). The exact conversion matters less for training than the principle: a hand time and an electronic time are two different measurements and should never sit in the same column unlabelled.
The technique
Position. Stand exactly level with the finish line, a few metres to the side, so you are sighting straight across it. Standing at an angle turns the finish into a guess. For 60m or shorter, a second person on the start makes a real difference; if you are alone, you are timing from first movement, and you should log it that way.
Start. React to the first movement of the athlete's body out of the blocks or from the standing position, not to the "go." Your own voice is the worst possible start signal because you know when it is coming. If a second person starts the athletes with a clap or a whistle, react to the sound.
Finish. Stop on the torso reaching the plane of the line, which is the rule for electronic timing too; not the head, not the foot, not the arm reaching forward.
One timer per athlete, or accept the compromise. Timing two athletes in one rep is possible with a lap-split stopwatch and a clear view. Three or more and the times for the trailing athletes are increasingly fiction. Say so in the log.
Do not round in your head. Write down what the watch shows. Rounding to the tenth happens later, if at all, and it happens consistently.
Flying sprints
For flying 30s the start reaction problem goes away if you start the watch on a mark rather than a person. Put a cone at the start of the flying zone and a cone at the end, stand level with the end cone, and start the watch when the athlete's torso passes the first cone. You are now reacting to two visual events of the same kind, which cancels most of the bias. This is the most reliable hand time in sprinting and it is why flying 30s are such a good week-to-week speed check.
Splits
A 200m split in a 400m, or a 30m split in a 60m, needs a second timer or a
watch with a split function and a timer who can hit it while keeping their
eyes on the athlete. The split will carry the same start bias as the total;
the difference between them (the second segment) is largely free of it,
which makes segment times unusually trustworthy. 30m: 3.94, 60m: 6.91
tells you the second 30m was 2.97, and that number compares well from week
to week even when the start reaction varies.
Making hand times comparable
Hand timing is not precise but it can be consistent, and consistency is what a log needs. Control what you can:
- Same timer. Every coach has their own reaction bias. Times from two different people are two different scales. If the timer changes, note it.
- Same method. From first movement, from a clap, from a cone: pick one per session type and never mix inside a comparison.
- Same watch. Phones and stopwatches differ by less than the human, but consistency is free.
- Same conditions where possible. Wind and surface change times by more than the method does. Log them with every timed rep, always signed for wind.
Logging hand times
The log entry that makes a hand time usable has four parts: the time as
shown on the watch, the method (HT for hand timed, FAT for fully
automatic), the start type (blocks, standing, flying), and the conditions.
60m 6.91 HT blocks, mondo, +0.4 is a data point. 60m 6.9 is a rumour.
Never convert hand times to electronic in the log. Store what was measured; convert at the point of comparison if you must, and label the result as converted. Mixing converted and raw numbers in one column destroys the one thing hand timing has going for it. When to stop hand timing
Two situations. First, a personal best that will be claimed anywhere outside the training group: only an electronic time counts, and telling a young athlete their hand-timed 10.9 "is basically 11.1 electronic" is kinder before the meet than after. Second, differences smaller than the method can resolve. A change from 6.91 to 6.88 on a hand-timed 60m over two weeks is inside the noise of a single timer on a good day. Look for trends over a month of comparable reps, and for the segment times, before concluding anything. Hand timing tells you whether an athlete is getting faster this season. It does not tell you whether they got faster this week.
