What are the rules of the triple jump?

A triple jump is a hop, a step and a jump: the hop lands on the take-off foot, the step on the other foot, and the jump lands in the sand. It is measured like the long jump, from the take-off line.

The sleeping leg

Touching the ground with the free (sleeping) leg during a phase is not a foul under World Athletics rules. Getting the hop and step order wrong is: the hop must land on the same foot the athlete took off from.

Board and wind

International competitions set the board at least 13 metres from the pit for men and 11 metres for women; younger and club athletes often use a closer board. Wind is measured for 5 seconds from a mark 35 metres before the board, with the same +2.0 m/s limit as the long jump.
