What are the rules of the long jump?
Take off from the board without touching the ground beyond the take-off line. The jump is measured from that line to the nearest mark in the sand made by any part of the body. The best valid jump wins.
What makes a foul
A jump is a foul (X) if the athlete:
- touches the ground beyond the take-off line while taking off;
- takes off from outside either end of the board;
- walks back through the sand after landing, or first touches outside the pit closer to the board than the nearest mark;
- uses any form of somersault.
Board, wind and attempts
The take-off line sits 1 to 3 metres from the near end of the pit. Wind is measured for 5 seconds from when the athlete passes a mark 40 metres from the line, and over +2.0 m/s the jump is wind-aided. Athletes get three attempts, and the best eight get three more.
